A cozy cabaret. At the tables, French is being spoken. By the piano, la chanteuse Marcelle is drawing her young audience into the latest hit by Edith Piaf or maybe a tune by one of the Americans who has been through town like Cole Porter or Duke Ellington. Is this really Paris in 1950? No, it's a classroom, USA, more than 50 years later, and the performer in front of us is Paris-born Claudia Hommel.

Cabaret-Paree Programs

Cabaret & workshop programs for grades K-12

In-school assembly performances for junior and senior high school audiences:

SOUVENIRS OF PARIS, 1950

The most widely-performed of Claudia's cabaret theatre programs, Souvenirs of Paris, 1950 introduces Marcelle, a Parisian cabaret owner who recounts through song and spoken word the events of her life in France before and after World War II. The musical revue features songs made famous by Edith Piaf, Juliette Gréco and Yves Montand and songs celebrating the Paree of American composers Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Vernon Duke.

PARIS IN THE JAZZ AGE, 1910-1940

With Bob Moreen at the piano and Claudia Hommel sometimes on top of it, they pay homage to the cakewalk, ragtime, the Charleston, Josephine Baker, Ada "Bricktop" Smith, Mistinguett, Maurice Chevalier, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, Darius Milhaud, and the "crazy years" between World Wars.

For Grades 4–6

THAT'S WHAT MAKES PARIS, PAREE

American and French perspectives on Paris are drawn from Claudia's own upbringing as the child of American parents in Paris (from Cole Porter and Vernon Duke to Jacques Prévert and children's folk songs).

For Grades K–3

MÉLODIES, MOUTONS ET MOTS D'AMOUR

In this French confection, we travel from slave ship to shepherd's field, from the monastery (where Frère Jacques' job is to ring the morning bells) to a French-Canadian garden of love. Claudia Hommel shares with youngsters the songs and stories she learned as a child from Paris. This is an a cappella performance intended for "on the floor" circles of up to 30 children.
